Question 1ESAT Maths 2Warm-up

What is the sum of the real solutions of 9x−12×3x+27=09^x - 12 \times 3^x + 27 = 0?
  1. A11
  2. B22
  3. C33
  4. D44
  5. E55
  6. F66
  7. G1212
Show the answer and worked solution

Answer: C · Method: Solve an exponential equation as a quadratic

  1. Let u=3xu = 3^x. Then 9x=u29^x = u^2, so u2−12u+27=0u^2 - 12u + 27 = 0, giving u=9u = 9 or u=3u = 3.
  2. 3x=93^x = 9 gives x=2x = 2, and 3x=33^x = 3 gives x=1x = 1. The sum is 33.

Why the tempting wrong answers are wrong

  • G: That's the sum of the values of 3x3^x, not of xx.

Question 2ESAT Maths 2Standard

What is the sum of all the real solutions of log⁡3(x+21)+log⁡3(x−5)=3\log_{3}(x + 21) + \log_{3}(x - 5) = 3?
  1. A−22-22
  2. B−16-16
  3. C66
  4. D77
  5. E2727
Show the answer and worked solution

Answer: C · Method: Combine logarithms, then check the domain

  1. Combine the logs: log⁡3((x+21)(x−5))=3\log_{3}\big((x + 21)(x - 5)\big) = 3, so (x+21)(x−5)=27(x + 21)(x - 5) = 27.
  2. Expanding: x2+16x−132=0x^2 + 16x - 132 = 0, with roots x=6x = 6 and x=−22x = -22.
  3. Both brackets must be positive. At x=−22x = -22, x−5=−27<0x - 5 = -27 < 0, so only x=6x = 6 works.

Why the tempting wrong answers are wrong

  • A: At x=−22x = -22, x−5x - 5 is negative, so the logarithm isn't defined.
  • B: One of the roots makes a logarithm of a negative number. Always check the domain.

Question 3ESAT Maths 2Standard

What is the sum of the real solutions of 4x−4×2x−32=04^x - 4 \times 2^x - 32 = 0?
  1. A11
  2. B22
  3. C33
  4. D44
  5. E55
  6. F66
  7. G77
Show the answer and worked solution

Answer: C · Method: Solve an exponential equation as a quadratic

  1. Let u=2xu = 2^x. Then 4x=u24^x = u^2, so u2−4u−32=0u^2 - 4u - 32 = 0, giving u=8u = 8 or u=−4u = -4.
  2. 2x=82^x = 8 gives x=3x = 3. 2x=−42^x = -4 is impossible, since 2x>02^x > 0. The sum is 33.

Why the tempting wrong answers are wrong

  • D: That's the sum of the values of 2x2^x, not of xx.
  • E: 2x2^x is always positive, so 2x=−42^x = -4 has no solution.
